OR Meet our lead Greens candidates:
David Shoebridge MLC
David is the No.1 Upper House candidate for the Greens in the 2011 NSW state election. He is a Greens MP in the NSW Parliament, serving in the State’s Upper House. David’s term commenced on the 7th of September 2010 when he was sworn in as an MP to fill a casual vacancy left by the resignation of Sylvia Hale. David has been preselected by the Greens NSW to lead the party’s Upper House ticket in the March State election.
David’s portfolios as an MP include Planning, Housing, Industrial Relations, Attorney General, Police, Corrective Services and Local Government. Recently David took a strong stance in support of the independence of the Parliament by ensuring that an Upper House inquiry sits to scrutinze the NSW Government’s privatisation of the State’s electricity industry.
Since 2004 David has also been an elected Greens Councillor on Woollahra Council where he has served a term as Deputy Mayor.
Before entering Parliament David worked as a lawyer, spending 6 years as a solicitor and more than 7 years as a barrister. In that time he acted for a broad range of people and organisations with a focus on employment, discrimination, industrial and tort law.
David lives in Sydney with his partner Patricia and their two daughters.
Amongst David’s current campaigns are to put in place a Bill of Rights for NSW, to stand up for the State’s public assets and services, to protect our most productive farmland from the expanding NSW coal industry and to have Part 3A of the State’s Planning Act removed to stop the State Government imposing excessive development on local councils and their residents.
Environmental protection and local planning and development issues - David is campaigning to repeal Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act that gives the planning minister powers to bypass councils and approve a range of developments, ignoring community opinion and reducing environmental and planning standards.
A Bill of Rights for NSW - Australia is one of the few advanced democracies that does not enshrine its citizens’ rights to essential freedoms in a core bill of rights. Without this, we give far freer rein to governments to legislate away our rights.
Housing affordability - Housing affordability, particularly in Sydney, has declined, with people under a great deal of pressure and spending more on accommodation. Everyone should have access to stable, secure and affordable housing.
A fairer justice system - David is working for a more humane justice system that focuses on addressing the causes of crime. Research shows regressive bail laws, more gaols and longer sentences are not the way to make our society safer.
