Policy summary

A key concern for coastal sand mining is the impact on local environmental flows and water supplies. Sand mining is a heavy water user, for dust suppression and washing. Extraction often involves mining below the water table.
Opposition to mining is also often based on community impacts, such as truck movements of dozens of B-double trucks each day, disruption to local agricultural industry, destruction of native flora and fauna, affect on property prices and proximity to people's homes.
The Greens NSW will work towards:
No new coastal mineral sandmining developments being allowed; and
Communities affected by sandmining being both adequately consulted about developments in their area, and compensated for the impacts on their amenity.
