Equality, rights and diversity
The Greens uphold and defend the dignity and humanity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. We will not tolerate a person being harassed, abused, vilified, stigmatised, discriminated against, disadvantaged or exploited because of their sexuality or gender.
The Greens will protect the civil liberties, human rights and democratic freedoms of all people. We celebrate diversity and the vibrancy it brings to Australian society, culture and economy.
The Greens are committed to pursuing changes in the law, government policy and community attitudes to achieve:
- protection from discrimination and vilification through amending existing state legislation, and eliminating exemptions currently provided in the Anti-Discrimination Act;
- complete relationship equality, including legal recognition of same-sex and transgendered relationships;
- complete workplace equality including removal of discriminatory provisions in State Government superannuation schemes and ensuring equal opportunity in all employment;
- equal parenting rights through equality of access to adoption and fostering, and artificial insemination and in vitro fertilisation procedures, regardless of sex and sexuality;
- complete equality before the law by removing all sections that prescribe different penalties for homosexuals;
- recognition of gender diversity through the addition of “intersex”, “other” and “N/A” categories to gender descriptions; full funding of gender assignment and re-assignment services; and gender assignment for intersex people only with informed consent;
- safety for all by improved policing and anti-violence measures, including LGBTI issues training for all levels of police; and funding for community-based anti-violence campaigns;
- support for LGBTI young people, by implementing anti-homophobia policies, support services, suicide prevention programmes, and maintaining the equal age of consent;
- improved health and welfare services, including counselling, accommodation, sexual health, drug counselling, and a renewed commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS; and
- Improved cultural and community services, including support for LGBTI cultural and community festivals, events and other programs and funding for research into LGBTI issues.
