Bill Dorman

Greens candidate for Goulburn

Dorman

“Big changes need to be made by all of us if we want a world fit for future generations. The old parties have no future vision and still cannot see the importance of society and the environment. We need a fresh approach to politics and I feel the Greens are part of that approach.”

Bill helped establish the Goulburn Greens and the Southern Highlands Greens in 1994. Now his youngest child has reached, 8, Bill feels it is time to run for State Parliament for The Greens.

“The major issue for the southern end of the electorate of Goulburn is water. Solutions for sustainable management of Goulburn’s water supply into the future are a hot topic with much work being done by commuity and local government.

“In the northern end of the electorate the Kangaloon bore fields as well as drawing water out of the Shoalhaven river are issues that are disturbing the electorate. The government attitude to water for Sydney at the cost to the region angers many.

“Across the whole electorate is the issue with development. The State is taking over many areas of development approval and cutting out local input. This can be seen in developers abusing the regulations with housing for the aged (SEPP 5). We also have problems with so called state significant developments where local input is totally excluded. The proposed Mariner development in Goulburn is an example of this.

“Public transport and education are also high on the agenda across the electorate. The effect of the Howard Government’s Workchoices legislation and the inability of government to deal with Global Warming are also unsettling the community."

Bill and Josephine have a young family and Bill has spent the last 12 years working part time so he can share the raising of the kids and have input into community.

In the 13 years Bill has lived in Goulburn, activities have included:

  • 11 years on Council's environment committee;
  • Active supporter of youth culture through the Lieder Youth Theatre, Grab festival, Goulburn’s Olympic Torch Relay component and youth council dance nights;
  • Campaigns relating to Reconciliation, Goulburn International Airport proposal, Goulburn Incinerator, refugee issues, Woodlawn Mega tip, Iraq war, and Workchoices legislation;
  • Member of the Goulburn District Unions, West Goulburn P&C, NSW Teacher Federation, Rural Australians for Refugees, and Lieder Theatre.
