Lakemba

Bashir Sawalha

Greens candidate for Lakemba

Bashir L

Born and raised in Palestine, Bashir's experiences there ignited a passion for social justice and led him into political activism. He has been involved in campaigns against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Coming from a non-English speaking background, Bashir has made concerted efforts to ensuring that those who feel voiceless in our society have a chance to be heard with respect and dignity.

“The Greens Party is the best hope for redirecting our nation on a more humane, just and peaceful course,” said Bashir.

“The Greens have a track record in addressing the many issues that face the people of our society. We are not afraid to confront political and corporate giants who do not act or perform in the genuine best interest of the people. The people of NSW will have an opportunity to make history on Election Day, by electing more Green MPs to stand up and speak out for the people of NSW.”

Bashir was one of the founding members of the Bankstown branch of the Greens that has now been operating for almost three years. He was Greens candidate for 2003 State Election and 2004 Council Election.

Bashir will be campaigning in Lakemba to:

Stop racial profiling and address the causes of crime;

Obtain more funding for public health;

Reduce public school class sizes; and

Combat climate change with better public transport and cycleways.

Bashir Sawalha, resident of Lakemba for 10 years, has conducted a successful local business for the past six years. During that time he has been active as a volunteer in local community organisations, including being a member of Lakemba Chamber of Commerce.

Bashir graduated from Hebron University in Palestine with a Bachelors Degree in Educational Psychology and obtained his Masters degree in Management and Human Resources Development from Sydney University. He is married and a proud father of two children.
