Lismore
Andy Gough
Greens candidate for Lismore (Northern Rivers)
Andy Gough joined The Greens in 1997 when he realised it was only The Greens who, at all levels of politics, have a positive vision and practical policies.
Andy is standing as a Greens candidate because he believes the Lismore electorate has been neglected by the Labor government and the Nationals have been ineffective in providing the Northern Rivers a voice in parliament.
"After 20 odd years of denying the realities of climate change, the major parties cannot be trusted to take action to act now to save our future. Only the Greens offer genuine solutions to global warming."
“The closure of the Casino to Murwillumbah rail line and inadequate bus services has put more cars and trucks on our roads and made public transport an important issue for the Northern Rivers." Visit Trains on our Tracks to find out more.
“Federal WorkChoices and Welfare to Work legislation are having a negative impact on our region where one in three people are dependent on some form of welfare.
“Health services are also desperate since the Lismore rehabilitation unit and several smaller rural hospitals were closed.”
Andy was a member of the management committee of the Environment Centre NT, which co-ordinated the campaign and blockade against the Jabiluka uranium mine in Kakadu. When Andy lived in the Northern Territory he worked with Senator Bob Brown to overturn the NT's mandatory sentencing laws and spent time in East Timor working with Timor Aid.
Andy has been an active member of the Northern Rivers Greens (formerly Summerland Greens) since 2000 when he moved to the Lismore area from Bees Creek, south of Darwin. Andy is currently the secretary of the owners corporation of the community where he lives with his wife, Georgina, on two acres living sustainably on solar power and tank water. He has worked as a graphic artist for the Northern Rivers Echo and the Nimbin Good Times newspapers, and hosted a drive time radio program on 2NCR FM.
