No Cement Terminal in White Bay but What Next?
Monday 27 November 2006
It has been announced today that I C & L has withdrawn their application to build a bulk cement terminal in White Bay. The withdrawal comes after a concerted community campaign in which the Greens have been prominent from the beginning.
"The
doubts raised about the project by Planning Minister Sartor have a lot
to do with him trying to reduce community anger in a marginal seat in
the lead up to the election."
"This announcement gives no guarantee that the cement terminal
project or something equally inappropriate for the site will not be put
straight back on the agenda after the state election." Cr Rochelle
Porteous, Greens Candidate for Balmain.
"Where is the commitment in this announcement to a moratorium on
all development applications in White Bay, Glebe Island and Rozelle Bay
until we get the strategic and visionary planning that this part of the
Harbour deserves?"
"The Greens, the community and Leichhardt Council want commitment
to long term planning and a fully consulted Masterplan for the whole
inner west Harbour."
"We are currently fighting the inappropriate development proposal
of Dry Docks Storage at Rozelle Bay which is overwhelmingly opposed by
the community and Council. We also have a new development proposal from
Bailey Marines for White Bay on Wharf 6 calling for submissions."
"If Frank Sartor is serious about strategic planning for the Inner
West Harbour he needs to show it by putting moratoriums on these
applications – and he needs to do this now. "
"Anything less than a moratorium and it is clear that Sartor has
dumped the whole of Harbour Masterplan in the too hard basket. It is
clear that the Treasury is the one really driving the planning of White
Bay, Glebe Island and Rozelle Bay and that this State Government is
without vision and without the capacity to strategically plan for
Sydney."
