Real growth not GDP

How do we build an economic system that serves the needs of people and nature, both for today and for tomorrow?

The economy is a tool; a tool we humans invented – like democracy and politics – to help govern our relationships between each other, and between ourselves and the world we live in. If our economic tools are not getting the outcomes we want, making us happy, safe, healthy, better educated and fulfilled and protecting and preparing our country for an increasingly uncertain future in a world on track to be 4 degrees warmer, then it is time our economic tools changed.

We can save lives - from today

Most of us in Australia are lucky enough not to know what would make someone so desperate that they would board a dangerous, overcrowded boat and sail into heavy seas in the faint hope of a future worth living. We can’t imagine what it means to leave everything behind, fleeing from the threat of persecution or death.

Your rights as a residents to object to obnoxious over-development are is now at risk. The NSW Minister for Planning, Brad Hazzard, announced last week that the government would be confining the public’s right to have a say to “strategic planning”. From then on, he said, it would be “full steam ahead” for developers.

Greens challenge Police Minister to public debate on proposed Big Brother Laws

Greens MP and Justice Spokesperson David Shoebridge is challenging The NSW Police Minister to an open public debate on his proposal to have a national police DNA profile taken of all newborn babies.

"The Minister has said he wants a debate on these Big Brother laws. Well, let's get started," Mr Shoebridge said.  

 

Police Minister refuses to release Taser death footage

In NSW Parliament question time today, Police Minister Michael Gallacher refused to release the Tasercam footage from the fatal incident involving Brazilian student Roberto Curti.

Greens NSW MP and Justice spokesperson David Shoebridge, asked the Minister:

"Why have NSW Police not already released to both the public, and the representatives of Mr Roberto Curti, the video and audio recording taken by all the Police Tasers used in the tragic events that lead to this young man's death on 18 March and when will the Police release this material?"

The NSW Police need to release the full CCTV footage of an alleged police assault on a member of the public outside Rose Bay Police station, according to Greens NSW MP and Justice spokesperson David Shoebridge.

Govt fails to legislate Aboriginal representation on young offenders review panel

The NSW Upper House passed legislation late last night which will formalise the existence of the Serious Young Offenders Review Panel. The government, however, rejected a Greens amendment which would have legislated Aboriginal representation on the Review Panel.
