Don’t Relax Safety Standards to Cover Up Government Bungles on Trains

Tuesday, March 6, 2018 | Dr Mehreen Faruqi

Greens NSW MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC has reacted to reports that transport officials want to relax safety standards to accommodate the Government’s bungled up order of intercity trains that are too wide for the existing tunnels on the Blue Mountains line.

Dr. Faruqi said:

“You can’t just relax safety standards retrospectively because you ordered the wrong trains. This is a ludicrous proposition from this Government.

“The public will have to pay many times over for this Government’s bungled decision. The community will pay with their time when the line is closed for this widening, through their taxes on tunnel widening, and they will now have to wait even longer for the new trains to start running to Lithgow.

“The Government needs to come clean that the tunnel widening has all to do with their bungled procurement of new trains. Trains can be ordered in all sorts of lengths and widths, so why didn’t this Government order trains that would fit the existing infrastructure?

“This Government doesn’t care that their stuff ups have a cascading effect on public transport, commuters and the taxpaying public,” she concluded.
