Foreign donations ban: government admits big money corrupts

Thursday, December 7, 2017 | Lee Rhiannon

Commenting on the government’s bill to ban political donations from foreign entities, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Rhiannon says that the logic should be extended to donations from domestic sources and the Greens will move amendments to that effect.

“With this bill, the Turnbull government has admitted that big money corrupts politics,” said Senator Rhiannon.

“If we can get past the dog-whistling, we should extend that logic to domestic political donations.

“Whether it’s yuan from Beijing or dollars from Sydney, big money corrupts our democracy.

“The Greens will seize this admission to move amendments that will also clamp down on big money from domestic sources.

“We will move amendments to ban donations from certain sectors, like property developers, and increase transparency.

“If the government does not engage with these amendments, this bill will be revealed to be a xenophobic fig leaf.

“We’ll also be looking closely at the bill to ensure the government is not using it to attack its political enemies,” said Senator Rhiannon.
