Greens Support Striking Bus Workers – Public Transport Not Private Profit

Thursday, May 18, 2017 | Dr Mehreen Faruqi

Greens NSW MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has come out in support of striking bus drivers and strongly criticised the plans to privatise Inner West bus services.

Dr. Faruqi said:

“I have some news for Mr Constance, he is the Minster for Transport and Sydney Buses sits under his leadership. It is he who has failed the people of the Inner West with sub-par services and he should take responsibility to fix it, instead of flogging it off. Public transport is for public benefit, not private profit.

“We know the Transport Minister has picked the Inner West for the privatisation experiment because the Liberals don’t have much skin in the game as they are mostly Labor and Greens seats.

“The bus complaints is a fig leaf for their ideological obsession with privatisation. The STA bus contracts are amongst the biggest in the states so private corporations are no doubt smacking their lips at the profit they can make off the taxpayer and the travelling public.

“This area is notorious for traffic congestion so slapping some new paint on the buses isn’t going to change anything. In fact, with the WestConnex due to spew tens of thousands of cars onto suburban streets we can only expect things to get worse.

“The Greens will always stand with workers who are striking for their rights. The privatisation of bus services in the Inner West will be a disaster for workers, drivers and the public” she concluded.
