Light Rail Debacle Shows Need for Parliamentary Oversight

Friday, April 20, 2018 | Dr Mehreen Faruqi

Greens MP and Transport spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has called the CBD and South East Light Rail a debacle following reports that the completion date of the light rail has blown out by a year. The NSW Government is also being sued by construction company Acciona for misleading conduct.

Dr. Faruqi said:

“The NSW Government had an opportunity to build a world class light rail system, but their obsession with secrecy, their dismissal of the environment and their preoccupation with privatisation of public transport has left the public with an expensive lemon of a project.

“Responsibility for this debacle sits directly with the Transport Minister and the Premier Gladys Berejeklian.

“Instead of being honest with their mistakes, the Government has tried to hide them again and again, treating the community with contempt.

“The project needs to be opened up to public scrutiny now, more than ever. The newly formed Public Works Committee could easily do this.

“For literally years I have been advocating for a parliamentary inquiry to investigate this project, including the unexplained change of route to benefit the racecourse, the loss of irreplaceable trees and the cost blowouts.

“At this rate, we could end up with the world’s most expensive light rail system” she concluded.
