NSW Government Slashes Hundreds of Millions from Public Transport Budget While Wasting Billions on Toll Roads and Cost Blowouts

NSW Greens MP and Roads & Transport spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has criticised a decision by the Minister for Transport to cut hundreds of millions of dollars from public transport at a time when pressure on Sydney’s public transport system is rising.

Dr. Faruqi said:

“At a time when public transport demand has never been higher, it beggars belief that they want to effectively cut the budget of the department which operates and plans public transport across the state.

“We know their agenda is to slash in-house expertise because these are the people standing up to their poor planning and political agenda. When they cut expertise from public services, they cut out people who can steer Government decisions in the right direction, and prevent cost blowouts and wasteful projects.

“The Liberal-National Government is wasting billions of dollars on dangerous and polluting toll roads, and we have seen massive cost blowouts on transport infrastructure projects and yet they want to slash the budget of the public servants who can reign in this madness.

“After recent revelations that Transport for NSW are investigating leaks from the department, one is compelled to ask; is this a veiled attempt to weed out people who disagree with the Minister’s wasteful decisions?

“Slashing hundreds of millions from public transport not only erodes expertise in public services where it’s most needed but will also lead to poor services.

“It’s the age old technique; defund public services, run them down, and then hand over money and contracts to their mates in the private sector,” she concluded.
