NSW Transport Minister Must Take Responsibility for Sydney Public Transport Meltdown

Tuesday, January 9, 2018 | Dr Mehreen Faruqi

Greens NSW MP and & Transport spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has called on the NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance to take responsibility for Sydney Trains going into meltdown this week.

Dr. Faruqi said:

“It’s simply not credible for the Minister to say workers taking sick leave is responsible for Sydney’s trains going into meltdown this week. The timetable overhaul has simply taken away all contingencies in the system meaning breakdowns and delays ricochet through the system.

“Minister Constance must take responsibility for the delays and immediately commit to properly funding Sydney Trains to run effectively and efficiently.

“The system is stretched to the limit and their response is to close down two train lines and hand them over to the private sector. I suspect this Government’s strategy is to run the system into the ground to make the handover to the private sector more palatable, meanwhile the people suffer.

“If the tens of billions allocated for the privately run metro were spent on improving and expanding the Sydney Trains network, millions of Sydney commuters would benefit with a more reliable, useful and comfortable commute” she concluded.
