Women in NSW Public Service Senior Leadership Positions Continue to Lag

Friday, December 23, 2016 | Dr Mehreen Faruqi

Greens NSW Spokesperson for the Status of Women, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has called on the NSW Government to redouble efforts for gender parity in the public service with a new report from the Public Service Commission showing that just 36% of senior leadership roles in the public service are held by women. The worst areas are Transport and Justice where less than 25% of senior roles are held by women.

Greens NSW Spokesperson for the Status of Women, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC said:

“It is a crying shame that in 2016, only just over a third of senior jobs in the public service are held by women.

“The report out today shows that women in the public service are massively overrepresented in low paying jobs, and men massively over represented in high paying jobs. This has to change.

“Some departments, such as Family and Community Services, have very high levels of female senior leadership roles but others, such as Transport and Justice have appallingly low levels. We need parity across the whole spectrum, especially in traditionally male dominated areas.

“The Premier has said he wants 50% female senior leadership by 2025. This report shows that we are a long way off that target” she concluded.
